After Ultra

27th
After photos and chatting we headed to get changed, using the public loos' in the car park at the finish.

I changed my top half then tackled the bottom half, my feet ...!
I remember worrying that my toes might actually come off in my socks.
I was met with what I expected. Black toe nails and I had a weird, what looked like a blister on my little toe. Nothing had fallen off toe-wise though, which was a relief.

I was so grateful for my change of clothes, especially the comfy shoes I'd taken and I'm tempted to take flip-flops for the next one :P

'Fugly feet' was the text I sent to my friend :)

I was glad to be heading for home. I wanted a soak in a hot bath with Epsom salts, to put on my Pjs' and enjoy a beer and the chilli made by the hub aka The Chilli Diaries

I used my massage roller, stretched a little and I went to bed, not late, and slept well.

I woke with a little stiffness, but nothing major other than my sore feet :'( which I was miffed at for wearing the wrong shoes. As a runner [ahem] I know better than to change something on race day!

28th
I came downstairs sideways, something I'm used to, and not too bothered with :D

I was banned from any running by the hub, who had taken a few days off with me ... so I was just chilling around the house. We nipped to the local supermarket in the day for something and a chance to stretch my legs, and I discovered that I couldn't actually walk properly, but instead did a weird fast-ish shuffle along side of the hub. The hub asked what I was doing ...

"after 7 & a half hours I can now only run" I replied.

Thank god I'd thought ahead and day off requested a few days from work after the ultra!
He made me wait at the doors after shopping and brought the car round :/

Pauline messaged me later in the evening "Drink plenty water. If your feet not to sore try little walk to loosen up. Watch the blood blister"

I was relaxing and watching TV, then got up to do something, to my surprise my right leg didn't follow on. "$%&@ ... I'm crippled!" I dragged my broken self to the kitchen and came back with frozen peas. I located the pain [glute / buttock] and sat on them! Family comments were made about not wanting peas again ...

Pauline was / is as supportive after running as during and messaged me to see how I was, and to offer advise.
"Toe nails will soon come back, that's Ultra running for you. lol"
"Keep massaging the buttocks, yea you need to give yourself time to heal fully or you will have more injury's"
"Let me no if you need anything or any help. Rest today let your body heal. Xx"
I used my massage roller and took ibuprofen before bed.

29th
When I woke the next day everything ached at first, descending the stairs sideways I worried I wouldn't be recovered in time for my up coming 12 hour shift! After breakfast, later in the day the hub could see I was bored and suggested a drive to the garden centre. I was feeling much better and jumped at the chance! We looked at plants, spent too much and [I] took photos' of the in-house cats :)

The evening was spent chilling with TV and my doing some rolling on my legs, especially my buttocks! I also painted my toe-nails red.

30th
I woke and was quite well! I'd arrange to go for lunch with my daughter and we walked into town. After eating I stood up and felt my back 'go'. I stopped. Motionless. Assessing the situation. "My back can't go, not in here, with all these people! ... move. MOVE"
I straightened up and slowly left the pub. Relieved the pain went and I walked normally home!

31st & 1st

Back to work :'(
My shifts went well. No aches or pains and the constant moving about / walking was good for me. My work-mates asked about my ultra, I told them about my toe-nails ;)

2nd April
I had a massage booked :) I was looking forward to it! Danny at SB Sports Massage worked wonders with a deep massage on my legs. I'd soon be back to 'normal'.

3rd
I'd done the obligatory rest week and I went for my first run since the ultra :)
It wasn't too bad! I'm a slow runner anyway, and it wasn't too unlike previous runs on the route, except I was tired from not running, and my toes were a little sore.

Strava
The 'nearly threw up in first mile but then went ok' run

I think I fared well after 7 & half hours on my feet with only last minute training and a relatively average fitness! The only real casualties were my feet ...

Since the ultra I've bought a used treadmill to work on speed & intervals so even as a slow runners I'll be [hopefully] faster. I've looked for trainers better suited to my feet to reduce injuries, a wide toe-box and cushioning. After my back 'twinge', I will work more on my core strength! My training will be more varied. Long runs and on and off road runs.
More hills and more trails. I've recently just done two off-road events.

Building strength in my legs to endure my next ultra ... Better get to it! :)

Oh, next ultra you say? Yes!

I'm a slow runner. A shuffling runner. A started late in life runner.
I'll never be a front of the pack runner and win a race, but I will go the distance and finish.

Oh, and I still have my toe-nails [for now].
